Physical Appearance: Paunchy, middle-aged, gray eyed. He was described with dark and curly hair and gray eyes when he was 16. Katniss even described him as “something of a looker.”
Character History: Haymitch won the 2nd Quarter Quell (50th Hunger Games) when he was 16. During the games, he developed an alliance with Maysilee Donner. When Maysilee dies, he stays by her side. After the games, his life spiraled down due to his alcoholism. By the time for the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, his dialogue was unintelligible due to his drunk state. When Katniss and Peeta encounter him, they try to stop him from drinking. Haymitch makes them a deal: they don’t interfere with his drinking and he’ll stay sober enough to help them. Katniss and Peeta agree, and Haymitch later tells them to obey their stylist and stay by each others’ side. He later coaches Peeta and Katniss individually and tells them to never underestimate strength in the arena. With Peeta, he sets up the “star-crossed lovers” image in order to aid both of them in the arena. When Katniss later protests against this, he tells her it is a way to win the sponsors. When the Games start, he later sends Katniss some ointment for her hands. He later sends Katniss broth when she kisses Peeta, indirectly telling her to carry on the “star-crossed lovers” impression. Later, he congratulates Katniss after she wins the 74th Hunger Games (with Peeta) and warns her that the Capitol is angry with her for defying them. He tells her that her only defense “can be you were so madly in love you weren’t responsible for your actions.” It is later revealed he prevented the Gamemakers from surgically altering Katniss’s body.
Six months later, Haymitch is still drinking. When Katniss tells him about President Snow’s visit to her home, he tells her that she and Peeta must be together for life in order to satisfy the Capitol. He later tells Katniss that he intended to bring her out of the arena the previous Hunger Games. When Katniss tells him she wants to start an uprising, Haymitch mocks the idea and tells her it won’t work. When the twist in the Quarter Quell is announced, both Peeta and Katniss come to Haymitch (in that order respectively) and he agrees to help each of them save the other person. Later, Haymitch establishes their alliances and tells Katniss to “remember who the enemy is.” Katniss later sees him in Heavensbee’s hovercraft when he explains the plan to break Katniss and Peeta out of the arena. When he tells her that he intended to save Katniss all along and that Peeta was captured by the Capitol, Katniss attacks him and scratches his face, taking his secrecy as betrayal.
